Press Release Body: Just opened this week is the new Applied Scholastics Academy in
downtown La Jolla. This pre-K through 6th grade private school on Cuvier Street,
combines a traditional emphasis on the basics with a 21st century approach,
according to its President, Ian Lyons.
The school, currently offering its summer camp, still has openings for both this
and its fall enrollment. It has small class sizes which Lyons says enable teachers
to provide individualized attention so the children can progress at their own pace.
Parents can take advantage of a free drop-in visit day by calling 858 454 1972.
Ian and his wife, Ruth, who moved across the country to head up the school, were
themselves schooled in the UK and Europe. They bring a unique approach to
education with them, striving to ensure that all children are equipped with the
proper tools for learning and study, based on Study Technology, developed by author
and humanitarian, L. Ron Hubbard.
Ruth Lyons, the principal of the school explains the use of Study Technology,
stating: "Not only does this approach enhance the phonics-based Applied
Scholastics reading program and attention to the 3Rs, but also involves good
dictionary practice and research skills that provide children with the ability to
discover and learn for themselves. These are very important steps in helping
children become self-learners who can succeed in life."
Ian quotes a study done by Johnson O\'Connor on vice presidents of United States
corporations, "The single common factor in their success was a large vocabulary and
a precise understanding of the words they knew." Lyons is striving to provide
each child with this same advantage by teaching study skills along with other key
subjects for this modern world - computers, earth and space sciences, music and the
arts.
Study Technology was developed by Hubbard in response to the lowering literacy
levels of adults in the late 20th century, publicized broadly by the NALS survey
showing 44 million America adults were missing the basic literacy skills to hold a
job. Hubbard wrote as early as 1976 when significant drops in SAT scores were
already signaling the onset of a decline in America\'s lead in education, "It is of
vital importance that the quality of education be revitalized and improved. As Man
is as able as he can learn and know, it is urgent that a workable learning
technology is available to him.\" Applied Scholastics, a non-profit organization,
took on the task of making Study Technology available to educators and schools
across the world so that children were armed with the tools of how to learn. Now,
Applied Scholastics Academy, one of 5 new Academies in Southern California and part
of a network of over 750 educational institutions across the world, is bringing
this approach to La Jolla..
